Put your phone outside the bedroom

When I first heard about sleep texting, I was taken aback and found it very interesting. Though I have always texted more than I have spoken, it never occurred to me. I spend a lot of time texting and on social media. I even wake up in the middle of the night and see tweets and messages, but I never forget to recall them in the morning.

It is a growing fact that people send messages while they are asleep. According to an article in The Atlantic, sleep texting can fall under the umbrella of Parasomnia, a sleeping disorder when people do things asleep.

Teenagers fall victim to this intriguing disorder. Young people today are so obsessed with their phones that they check them seemingly every two minutes or more and spend almost one and half hours sending texts each day according to an article in CNN. Because of the almost obsessive cell phone use, is not surprising to me that they use their phones to text while sleeping.

Experts believe that Parasomnia usually begins to occur when the person is half-conscious. A beep of an incoming message alerts them to check their phones and sleep texting begins.

However, I believe it is completely harmless. It doesn’t happen very often to people and aside from embarrassment, what’s the worst that could come from it?. Although in long term, it may have some impact on our sleep health, that is yet to be determined.

Sleep texting has become so common today that no one finds it strange. Sent messages can be funny with spelling blunders, and will probably cause some embarrassment after you see them in the morning.

Almost everyone I know sleeps with their mobile phones beside their beds. It is very easy to be woken up just enough to check for comments on your Facebook status when you spend most of the day on your mobile phone.

Today it seems that everyone has a sort of “sleeping disorder.,” I think it is very easy to stop this sleep texting problem. Parents shouldn’t let their kids have electronic devices in their bedrooms and should limit their access during the day. For adults, I recommend that they don’t use their bedrooms for purposes other than rest. Office work and excessive social networking should be kept out of the room to avoid confusing our bodies. So when you sleep or take a nap, turn your phone on silent or even turn it off; you never know what nonsense you may sleep text next.
